Crimes reported in the Third District down fifth week in a row
During this week’s Management Analytics for Excellence (MAX) meeting,Third District officers said that property crimes in the district have been decreasing consecutively for the past five weeks. According to Lieutenant Christian Hart, no uniform property crimes were reported the prior Wednesday (Dec. 7).
“Fifth week in a row we’ve gone down, so back down to 33, which is a lot but like I said it’s the lowest so far,” Hickman said.
The bulk of this week’s uniform property crimes were auto burglaries, which numbered 15 on Dec. 13. According to Hickman, at least five “smash and grab” incidents occurred from one end of Canal Street to the other on the Third District Canal Boulevard and may be related, so civilians should beware of leaving their belongings visible.
“If your purse is sitting on the passenger seat and you’re anywhere off, give or take a couple blocks of Canal, they’re going to smash the window; they’re going to take the purse,” Hickman said.
The NOPD are currently seeking assistance in identifying two males that committed an auto burglary on Dec. 8. around 3:18 a.m. on the 400 block of Bellaire Drive.
Seven vehicle thefts were reported for the week on Dec. 13, and Hickman said that the seven happened in different zones in the district and mostly overnight. There is no evidence to currently tie the vehicle thefts together.
“They’re still kind of running along Gentilly, the majority of them, from one end of our district to the other along Gentilly and Chef Mentuer,” Hickman said.
Anyone with any information regarding the identity of these suspects on Bellaire Drive please contact any Third District detective at 504-658-6030. Citizens with information that can help solve crimes are asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP.
