Homicide reported on Louisa Street
New Orleans Police Department officials reported that a man was killed Thursday afternoon (March 23) in a homicide on the 5000 block of Louisa Street. Both Mary D. Coghill Elementary School and KIPP McDonogh 15 Middle School were placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes due to police activity in the area.
[Update: 3/24/17, 10:40a] At about 1:19 p.m., Third District officers responded to a call of shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive black male lying in the street suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the body. The victim was transported to an area hospital by EMS, where he was pronounced dead.
The two schools lifted their lockdown around 2:30 p.m., according to the NOPD.
Investigation into the incident is ongoing. No further information is available at this time. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will determine official cause of death and release the victim’s name, upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
