Man shot to death while in car near the lakefront identified as killer of Kermit Ruffins’ niece
A man shot to death Monday night (April 11) near the lakefront and the Southern University at New Orleans campus was convicted of in 2018 of killing Milan Arriola, the daughter of a New Orleans police officer and firefighter and the niece of trumpeter and bandleader Kermit Ruffins.
Police were called to the 5000 block of Leroy Johnson Drive at about 9 p.m. on Monday. They found a man in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders took the victim to the hospital, where he died the next day.
The Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jaleel Broadway, 27. Reporter Missy Wilkinson revealed on NOLA.com that Broadway was one of two men charged in the murder of 20-year-old Arriola in 2015. She was shot to death while riding in a friend’s car.
The charges for Broadway and his co-defendant were reduced through a plea deal with prosecutors in 2018, Sheriff’s Office records show. He was sentenced to 20 years with credit for time served and was released in November 2021.
