Roadwork ahead: Bike lane, crosswalk work to resume on Gentilly Boulevard
From the Mayor’s Office
Beginning Tuesday (May 24), weather permitting, the city’s Department of Public Works contractor, Pavement Markings, will resume safety improvements including updates to the bicycle and pedestrian facilities along Gentilly Boulevard — from Grand Route St. John Street to St. Bernard Avenue.
No parking will be allowed in this area for the duration of the project. The improvements are expected to take approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting.
This second phase of work on Gentilly Boulevard includes installing protected bike lanes and high-visibility crosswalks.

Existing and proposed typical roadway cross sections for
Gentilly Boulevard (N. Broad Street to New Orleans Street)
Bike lanes will be converted to parking-protected bike lanes with flex post delineators on the following lanes: lake bound from Laharpe to Onzaga streets, the river bound from St. Bernard Avenue to Trafalgar Street, and river bound from Derby to Grand Route St. John streets.
A lane merge, to reduce from two travel lanes to one, will be installed on the river-bound section of the street between Maurepas and Grand Route St. John streets.
City employees and volunteers have canvassed the area multiple times in advance of the start of the project.
This project is a part of Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s Moving New Orleans Bikes initiative to provide 75 miles of a connected bikeway network across the city. The project on Gentilly Boulevard is part of improvements planned for several corridors in the 7th Ward and surrounding neighborhoods.
Funding for this project is from the 2020 bond program as part of the Moving New Orleans initiative.
