Two people and a third person was injured were killed in a fiery crash on Leon C. Simon Drive overnight, New Orleans police said Monday morning.
The victims were in a white Chevrolet Impala that was “traveling at a high rate of speed” on Leon C. Simon Drive around 1:45 a.m. Monday, July 4, said NOPD Officer Juan Barnes, a departmental spokesman. The driver lost control of the car, and it veered off the road and crashed into a traffic light pole at Press Drive, catching fire, Barnes said.
“Both the driver and front passenger were badly burned and died inside the vehicle,” Barnes said in an email. “The female rear passenger was assisted by bystanders and managed to escape the wreckage. She was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.”
Afterward, New Orleans firefighters used the “jaws of life” to pull the two victims from the burned car, Barnes said.
“Blood and alcohol tests are pending and the investigation is ongoing,” according to a NOPD report on the crash. “The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an official autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.”
Anyone with information is urged to call the NOPD Traffic Fatality Investigator Mike Baldasso at 658-6237.
