Big Easy Rollergirls close 2017 season with triple header this weekend
The Big Easy Rollergirls, New Orleans’ competitive women’s flat track roller derby league, will close its 2017 season with three contests on Saturday, August 12 at the UNO Lakefront Arena, located at 6801 Franklin Avenue.
The event kicks off at 2:30 p.m. with a mash-up contest featuring skaters from around the area coming together to compete in a fun derby contest with a Star Wars theme.
At 5 p.m., the Big Easy Rollergirls’ Second Line will take on the Gulf Coast Missfits, consisting of members of the Gulf Coast Rollergirls from Lake Charles, La. and the Missfits Roller Derby from Humble, Tx.
At 7 p.m., the Big Easy Rollergirls All-Stars will take the track against the New Orleans Brass men’s roller derby league to close the evening.
“This is the last opportunity to see flat track roller derby here in New Orleans until 2018,” said Aaron “PR Mageddon” Looney, announcer for Big Easy Rollergirls. “The mash-up will be a fun game featuring skaters from across the Gulf South, while the Second Line will face a great team of skaters from the southwest Louisiana and east Texas areas. The game between the BERG All-Stars and New Orleans Brass has become a fun rivalry between New Orleans’ female and male roller derby leagues.”
As of June 30, the Big Easy Rollergirls’ All-Stars sit at No. 170 of the 331 international member leagues in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s rankings.
Proceeds from Saturday’s event will benefit Magnolia Community Services, a multi-service non-profit organization supporting adults with developmental disabilities. For more information, visit mcs-nola.org.
Event tickets for adults are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Admission for children ages 7-12 is $5 each, while children ages 6 and under are free.
