New Orleans East Hospital to open detoxification unit, diabetes center of excellence
The New Orleans East Hospital is opening a detoxification unit on Monday, Oct. 9 and later a diabetes center.
The New Orleans East Hospital, which opened last week on Sept. 27, offers services including primary care, orthopedics, pulmonary, gastroenterology and neurology. Townsend Recovery Center New Orleans will provide care to people with drug or alcohol addictions and offers 36 beds for detox and residential treatment.
“We are losing far too many people to the drug epidemic,” said Natashia Cheatham, Townsend CEO. “As the new leader of Townsend, it is my personal and professional mission to provide accessible, premium services for addiction treatment. New Orleans East Hospital is the ideal location for our new facility because we share a common goal of delivering high-quality care to those who need it most. This community was devastated by Hurricane Katrina and ever since there has been a dire need for medical care. By collaborating with the hospital on this initiative, we now have a greater opportunity to save more lives.”
The recovery center is located on the fifth floor of the hospital and is scheduled to open on Oct. 9.
Prior to opening, the hospital hosted an open house on Sept. 25 for community members to tour two floors of the building. There they could meet employees such as Aziza Landrum, community relations manager, and Takeisha Davis, CEO of New Orleans East Hospital.
Davis explained the need her and her colleagues hope to fulfill.
“After nine years of the hospital being closed, we anticipate that the clinic will be able to provide preventive care to our community members to keep them out of the hospital,” Davis said. “That sometimes can be counter intuitive, but it’s important for us to make sure that we’re meeting our goal and our mission of providing quality, healthcare, and educational empowerment to our community.”
The diabetes center focuses on education and treatment. Davis said the facility will teach community members to both eat well and take care of their families.
“We’re looking for strategic partnerships with some great partners around the state to bring evidence based care back to our community,” Davis said.
Davis said she anticipates the hospital launching the diabetes center of excellence in November, national diabetes month.
The New Orleans East Hospital’s is open 24 hours. Their upcoming diabetes center and their multi-speciality clinic accept all major insurances including medicaid.
