Nonprofit behind painted utility boxes to auction off ‘mini-boxes’ for benefit gala
The decorated utility boxes seen around New Orleans are part of The Metro New Orleans Street Gallery, a project by nonprofit Community Visions Unlimited (CVU). A local organization whose focus is “rebuilding neighborhoods through art, housing & empowerment”, CVU will be holding a benefit on Friday, Sept. 29 to help fund more art boxes citywide.
The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the New Orleans Yacht Club, located at 403 N. Roadway St. in the West End. It will feature food, drinks, a jazz trio, and a “mini art box” auction. Tickets are $35 and can be claimed via online donation here.
According to CVU, their utility art box program has raised over $100,000 for local artists and their materials, and will have covered every utility box in New Orleans within the next few years. The program has seen such success in the Greater New Orleans area that the organization has secured agreements with Jefferson Parish, Kenner, and St. Bernard as well.
Fun Fact: CVU’s Vice President Jeannie Tidy is a Gentilly Terrace & Gardens resident!
